The AIM-9 Sidewinder is the primary short-range air-to-air missile used by the F-16. It is a heat-seeking missile which homes on the infrared energy produced by the target aircraft's engine. Because it uses passive sensors, it does not require a radar lock to fire, and can track a target without causing an RWR alarm.
