Situational awareness (SA) is a term used in civil and military aviation to describe the pilot's comprehension of the situation around him. Aviation is a unique endeavor - it puts the pilot in an extraordinarily complicated environment where he must manage the aircraft and its avionics while keeping track of the situation around him. The speed of aircraft is another complicating factor - the situation is constantly changing, and the pilot is moving through it dynamically at a high rate of speed. Maintaining situational awareness is one of the pilot's most important duties - losing it could be catastrophic.
Many of the aircraft's avionics systems are dedicated to helping the pilot maintain situational awareness. The Horizontal Situation Display is primary among them - it displays a moving map, showing the situation around the aircraft, including its present position, steerpoints and navigational route, and also displays the location of friendly and enemy aircraft.
