Beyond Visual Range (BVR)
A Beyond Visual Range (BVR) weapon is a weapon intended for air-to-air combat with targets that are greater than 20 nautical miles away. At this range, radar must be used to guide the missile to its target. BVR weapons contrast with "visual range" weapons such as the AIM-9 Sidewinder or the F-16's cannon, which are generally only used when the pilot has visual contact with the target.
The AIM-120 AMRAAM is the primary BVR weapon used by the F-16.
