Manufactured by Gruman, the F-14 Tomcat is a multi-role fighter, used primarily as a long-range A-A combat interceptor. The Tomcat carries superior air-to-air weaponry and electronics. It is fairly agile close in, but its true strength lies in the immense range at which it can detect and track multiple enemy aircraft with the AWG-9 Radar and engage with the AIM-54 Phoenix missile [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AIM-54_Phoenix].
The F-14 made it's maiden flight on 21 December 1970. It entered active service with the US Navy in September 1974, and the last Navy Tomcat was decommissioned on 22 September 2006. The Tomcat is still flown by the Republic of Iran's Air Force, and was used extensively during the Iran - Iraq war.
